ANGEL (formerly Leale) (Arabber)
Angel is we think an arabian cross of some description - she is about 7-9 years old and is pregnant. We have no idea when she was bred or what she was bred to -- but her demeanor is improving and she will come to the gate now to come inside instead of having to be chased with a bucket of grain. She has never been taught to ride, just drive. She is currently in foal, she will be available to her new home once the foal is weaned.
Update March 12, 2008 - Angel had her feet looked at and it turns out she has road founder. She was on the street long enough to mess up her feet. She will recover, but it will take time. No baby yet - its thought shes in her mid second tri-mester from the way her belly is hanging.
Update March 21, 2008 - Angel has been appointed Horse Welfare's October 2008 Horse of the Month - Check her out!

BELLE
Belle is in her mid-late 20's. She originally was a range bred Morgan - who had been a brood mare out west. When she was purchased she was covered with whip marks - has been horribly abused, which is why she doesn't like being caught. She is fine once you get her in an enclosed area - like a stall...but getting her there is iffy. She came to us when the person that purchased her from out west was unable to use her as a brood mare - she just wouldn't get pregnant any longer. Belle has suffered plenty in her lifetime -- we are happy to just be able to care for her and send her love.

BLONDIE
Blondie is in her mid 20's - a quarter horse - she was sent to HorseNet when her owner found that her Percheron gelding had knocked Blondie off an embankment down a very steep hill. She was living in West Virginia at the time - and it took the lady several hours to not only reach Blondie, but to walk her out of the hole she fell into.
At that time she felt it was in Blondie's best interest to be in a different situation and she became a member of our blind herd. Blondie also has a condition called Cushings which is a tumor on the pituitary gland. She is on Chaste Tree Berry Powder and since she went on it last fall her hair has now shed out and she is looking very good. Blondie is very sweet and spends her days enjoying the sunshine with her companion Rita.

CHIEF (Formerly Sammy)
Chief is a 16 year old Tennessee Walker who only has about 20% vision left. He has a cataract in one eye that is very easily seen and the other eye is loosing ground. He was found in Harford County a year or so ago when neighbors noticed him loosing weight and not being cared for.
When animal control went to investigate, they found his owner had passed away, so no one was there to care for Sammy and he severely lost weight. Once discovered, he went to a boarding facility where they were unable to cope with his blindness, so they were going to put him down when the girl that sent him to us discovered him and took him home.
After a year and half she went back to school and found that she didn't have the time he needed, so Sammy came to us. He is doing well and finally adjusting to his new home.

CROMWELL (formerly Derby Dan)
Cromwell came to us when he lost his eyesight as his career as a event horse came to an end. He is very dignified and has settled in nicely with his new mini-bud named Lil Jack (a donkey). Lil Jack protects the 16hh Thoroughbred....it's quite interesting to observe. |

JAKE (formerly Pet Shop)
Jake came to us as one of the last horses from the Arabbers in Baltimore City. Jake is about 17 years old - only 11 hands (if that) and has a lovely long flowing mane. In his former life his name was Pet Shop -- which we thought was kind of icky - so we renamed him after the lady that purchased all the arabber horses to give them better lives. Jake is short for Jacobson --- and oddly enough which we did not know - Jake was Katherine's nickname when she was in high school. Due to former injury to one of his heels that was not cared for correctly; Jake now has a crooked foot. We are sure that will have some arthritic impact on him in time. Jake has joined the HorseNet family and is our newest mascot. He will be keeping the older ponies company....plus adding some spice to their life as he loves to run and play. |

KING (Arabber)
31 year old Arabber pony -- is almost blind. We were told that he was on the street at least 7 years pulling a cart. We had a "rolfer" work on him and he said that he has curvature of the spine - so he will be working on that to try to make him more comfortable. King is very sweet and is truely King of his little herd of mini's and ponies.

LONDON BRIDGE
London bridge is a 17 year old, 18.2 hand TB gelding who had a career as a show horse until he suffered a suspensory injury. Unfortunately after healing, he re-injured it to the point that he would only be sound for very light trail riding. His temperament is not suited for light trail riding, too much get up and go, so his owner kept him as a companion horse for her injured horses and babies. As life sometimes does, it threw her a curve and she found that she had to pull her son out of school and home school him. That meant her time at home was being pulled in too many directions - something had to go - it was London. London is now one of the blind herd, but not being blind, his job is one of seeing eye horse for them. He acts as an anchor to the rest of the herd, and is doing a wonderful job.

STAR (Arabber)
20+ year old Arabber pony -- came in with one shoe still hanging on with borium on it so we know he was also pulling on the street - and he is almost deaf. When the "rolfer" worked on him he could tell that he has had several broken ribs in the past. From his ribs being injured he learned how to hold his body stiff so that he could breathe without being in pain... although the injury was a long time ago he still has breathing issues so we will continue to work with him to get him to relax and realize that breathing isn't supposed to hurt.
